  1. Some girls are still learning to do it, and there are school classes for that :P, so it's fairly common.

  2. I still have a sewing machine and it still works, but my granddaughter thought it was a robot.

  3. It isn't really. But my aunt taught me how to do it and it comes in handy once and a while. Instead of wasting money to get someone to fix the clothing, it is cheaper (If you know how) to do it yourself.  If I had a daughter I would defiantly teach her how to knit and sew.

  4. My mom taught me to sew on the sly, because my dad would not allow any son of his to do women's work. And this included, cooking, washing, and other household duties. When I got married, the first time, I was glad I knew all that stuff. I survived. Now, in my second marriage, we both sew, we cook for each other on alternate occasions, and basically share the responsibilities of running the house. This has nothing to do with feminism, masculinity, subjugation, or any such c**p. We just chose to do things that way, because we are a team. Teaching children how to run a house is valuable to their survival in their formative years, and later share the responsibility with a significant other.

  5. What we should be doing is teaching the boys. If my clothes were damaged, I wouldn't want to give them to my wife to fix.

  6. Yes, though its quickly dying

I'm a guy and I learned, now I teach my friends - mostly just the girls, its actually kinda fun way to make bonds between them as a friend and or parent

  7. I think so.  At least, I learned some basic sewing as s kid and I think my little girl is getting to be old enough to learn.

  8. I think it's more on the practical side.If a person (girl or boy)know how to sew then he/she can do what ever style he/she wants to create and it will cost much lesser because he/she is the one who sew it rather than paying for it.If a person know how to sew ,even some simple stitches, then he/she can mend any of his/her clothes that needs mending.

  9. My mother taught me to sew and I do it well.  If I'd had a daughter, I'd have taught her to sew.  I had to train my husband to give me his clothing repairs and not go to the tailor.  I tried to teach my stepson minor stuff like how to sew a button on, but his mother freaked out.  She claimed it wasn't suitable work for her son.  Fine, his loss.

  10. I taught myself how to do it so I can make repairs and alterations. I don't really like to sew so that's pretty much all I do.

  11. I dont think it is.

Im 17 and can't sew to save myself, nor can my mother. When a button falls off a shirt we superglue it back on!! haha.

Home economics and design classes still take place in schools in Australia but we have the choice as to whether we participate in these classes or not. Most choose not too.

  12. yeah in home ec. class. We get taught how to babysit, sew, we get an egg and we have to take care of it like it is our child for a week ( i love doing that. ).

but yeah we learn to sew. the guys do to.

  13. I know how to mend clothes, I just picked up - have seen men and women display such a skill.

When I was little, the women used to make clothes for their babies, it was usual for magazines to come with patterns. I would love to be able to do that. Baby clothes are a rip off, and I would enjoy the creativity of making the clothes myself. ~

  14. ummm no not really.....it's cheaper to buy clothing then make it yourself

  15. its not common but i wish somebody would teach me..

wen i get a small tear on a shirt or i need to fix somethign cz its too big i gotta be following my grandma or my mom to fix it for me

  16. I dunno but I always admired needlepoint and I don't think anyone can do it anymore. It's a lost art.
