Is it still etiquette to have a house warming party?

My girlfriend and I are moving into a new flat, our first, and was wondering if it is still ok to have a house warming party? We are 27yr old, and so are most of our friends. We want to leave a list of gifts at a housewares shop. Is this still the way to go?

  1. i think the party sounds good because it will be fun

    but dont leave the list

people might think u r presuming they should bring u a gift

let them bring 1 from somewhere they want 2 if they want 2

it also means you'll get a more diverse range of gifts

some of which u might not even have thought of

  2. I think I would Have the party, some friends may buy you some gifts for your first home without having the list

  3. i think its totally rude. yep we just got a place, i want to invite all of you to buy us stuff for it!!

someone should do it for you to be nice...but if it doesnt happen i wouldnt do it on your own

  4. have the party but I've never heard of a gift list for one

  5. Don't do the list thats cheeky! Have the party though thats fine just dont expect anything from anyone.

Probably would be best to arrange to head to a club later on as that way u have a few drinks in your flat and still get rid of everyone early but have a good night out too.

  6. It's certainly not the "done thing" to have a list.  As already said, by all means have your friends around for a party, perhaps some may bring you a gift but don't expect it.  Sometimes it will be a bunch of flowers for the lady and a bottle for you, but it's not obligatory by any means.

And take the next day off to clean up and get over it. . . .

  7. So your motive is to get gifts? Not the way to go.

  8. It is still done as far as I know. It depends on the social circle I suspect as far as gift lists or simply people bringing something. I would want to have a party anyway, just to show off the new flat.

  9. have the party, but the list thing is just plain greedy
