Is it still possible for me to ever get on pointe in ballet?

I'm starting ballet tomorrow. My step mother took ballet her whole life, and told me I had a nice natural turn out, nice arches, ect. But she may just be trying to be nice. What I want to know is, while starting ballet at early 17, would I ever be able to get on pointe? Also, would I have more of an advantage of getting on pointe quicker, than somebody just starting ballet say at the age of 13? Thanks!

PS: Would it be so horrible to wear socks my first class? Haha, I havn't the time to go to the proper dance store.

  1. Hello,

anyone at any age can get on pointe. You wil not go on pointe any faster than anyone else though, as it depends on your strength and how many classes you take per week, etc. Dont rush yourself, talk to your teacher and tell her your wishes, She will be able to give you tips and help with getting on pointe quicker. I got on pointe after one year of ballet. And my teacher helped me get there by supplying strengthening excercises. I wish you luck.

  2. You should be able to get on pointe in 6 months or less since you are probably fully grown.  I have seen several women in their 20's and even early 40's who got to pointe in that time.  Much depends on your teacher's opinion, but mostly you and your talent, and work ethic- Good Luck.

  3. It is always a possibility to get onto pointe.  You should have about a year of experience before going on pointe, however.  Pointe can be a dangerous activity if done incorrectly, and safety is always an issue.  I am 15 and I am going onto my second year of pointe.  It is somewhat difficult, because you have to understand the big "no-noes" and the big "yeses!"  You have to understand that sickling is not only ugly, but it is also dangerous.  You want to dance on all of your toes, not your outside toes...anyway.  I probably just gave you an answer longer than you would have liked.  Haha.  For your first class, I would find a pair of tight and cuts the feet off.  That way you won't slip.  Dancing barefoot is always easier than dancing in socks.  If you have toe-pads or toe-thongs, those would work even better.  If you want to wear socks, though.  Feel free, because you can always take them off if you do not like them.

    Good luck!

  4. Of course it is possible, and I'm so glad you're starting ballet, because it truley is a wonderful art :) Just to warn you ballet may look very easy, but it is not at all.

I'm 13, and I took ballet from last fall to this past May. I did 5 days a week for 2 hours. This fall I am going to start pointe! I am very excited. If you work very hard I'm sure you can achieve your goal of going en pointe like I did.

Just dont give up, and believe in yourself!

Good luck & best wishes. <3

  5. well its possible for anyone to get on pointe but it takes like three years. It depends on  how hard you work if you work really hard then yes you might get on pointe faster than some one else. If your really anxious about pointe then take private lessons with your teacher that should help you with getting on faster.

P.S. it depends on your teacher if you should wear socks. Have you met her? Is she strict think about that. also walmart has like danskin tights that would do for the first couple classes before you get a chance to go shopping.

  6. you could but the average time you need to dance before you can go on pointe is like 6 to 7 years
