Question:

Is it strange that my 2 year old loves hair and string???

Ever since she was 6 months old, my 2 year old has loved string and hair. If she finds a piece of string on the ground, she will play with it and put it in her mouth and stroke it with her fingers. She tears the elastic string out of socks, and she pulls her hair out one strand at a time and eats it or runs it through her fingers. This is not something she does when she is upset. It is actually the opposite. She does this at bedtime and naptime and other times when she is very relaxed. I put socks on her hands at bedtime to stop her from pulling her hair out, but then when she wakes up, it starts back up again.

She is a very happy little girl with no emotional problems.

Is this normal behavior for a toddler? Her pediatrician says she hasn't really heard of this before, so I am guessing it isn't normal???

  1. It's something she likes to do.

    and she's Happy!!

    I wouldn't be worried =)

  2. hey, maybe she'll be a future beautiutician

  3. if it keeps her happy, i say let her be. it keeps her calm and at ease. i would recommend that you buy her a doll with long hair or perhaps just a regular fake ponytail. id rather have her pulling on that, than to be pulling on her own hair. also, you can purchase one of those Hanna Montana ponytails for little girls that have hair and ribbons or whatever on it. Good luck.

  4. i would say it is normal 4 her 2 like hair, but also i would try and stop her from pulling her hair out,i do it 2,strand by strand and play with it (im 23 though haha) and my hair is in an awful state, split ends consantly,i dont even notice im doing it

  5. Well, it's normal for toddlers to become fixated on certain things for long periods of time.  Unless she's hurting herself and pulling just gobs and gobs of hair, she should be fine.

It's really no cause for concern.
