Question:

Is it the cat food stinking up the house?

I am a self confessed clean freak. Every week, no question the house gets a top to bottom scrubbing. But every summer my home has a funk. I have gone through and cleaned the not-so-obvious spots... Im actively trying to de-stink with febreeze, baking soda, even Listerine, as I heard rumor it is a great deodorizer. I started thinking maybe I was nuts, because none of the actual items in my home smell. But when my boyfriend walked into my home and made a face I said "See, it does stink!" He said it smells like cat food.

So here is the thing, my cats only eat dry food. The litter box is in the basement. And I can't change food because one of my cat's has a digestive problem and this is the only food the vet wants me feeding him. Oust and opening windows is just a cover... The next morning I wake up and go to the kitchen and it's back.

Any thoughts?

. If you woulda read the question the food I'm feeding them is not 'c**p'. It is what my vet directed.

I read exactly what you wrote and what you are feeding is garbage.

Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or organ meat?

Is it full of grains that many cats have trouble processing?

Read the label. The problems your cat has most likely came from eating dry foods in the first place and feeding a different one isn't the answer. Cats are carnivores

and were not meant to eat cherrios.  If you want more info to benefit your cat you are welcome to email to discuss proper nutrtion

  2. Wow! I've never heard of dry cat food that stank. I have four cats and have never smelled their dry cat food. Perhaps you need to wash the dish out with a diluted bleach and soapy hot bath. Or if you keep it out all day log so your pet can nibble perhaps you could only put out enough for breakfast and dinner. Then it won't be sitting around 24/7. Or perhaps some where in your cupboard a mouse has made a little pile of cat food and it has gone bad?

    Hope you find the solution.

  3. where do you feed your cats?

  4. The cat food is an easy fix - bag it in plastic.   I never was a fan of litter boxes.  A t**d(processed cat food) or 2 especially from an animal with a digestive problem is no different than your stinky ones when you are sick.  They stink more because your system did not process them fully.   And cat turds are stankee.!!   Either get more litter in that box, and scoop it out more often or get your cat to go outside(in the neighbors flower garden(like they always do).

  5. Yes cat food if in a gravity feeder then it will smell up the house.

I would suggest open windows  and just feed a small amout at a time.

If you can change the location of the food for a while and see if THAT is the problem .  What about putting the cat food in the bathroom and leave an open window?

Put some vicks vapor rub in YOUR nose will not make you smell it either! ;0P,

Digestive problems in cats try 'acidophius" it is the good bacteria we all have in our intestines.. it is what is in Yougert.  That might help your cats digest better too.  I just put a pinch of it on my cats food from time to time... it comes in caps and in powder.

  6. Many cats cannot digest corn.  That's probably what is causing the major stink you're smelling.  The prescription diet is probably high in corn.   The prescription diet may not be any better for his digestive issues than any "junk" food if his real issue is the corn in the food.  I have one cat that cannot tolerate corn at all - indeed, you can't stand to live in the same house with him.  Speak to the vet about his issues - I've had a number of foster cats with digestive issues (and my own cat that I mentioned) who did splendidly on Innova's EVO, and California Natural.  Might be worth a try for you ...

  7. It sounds like you are telling my own story here. It's the litter box, it doesnt matter that its in the basement, because its hot, the terds and urine smell worse because the heat intensifies it, I started using the scoopable kind and scooping everyday and that helped, they also sell a powdered deodorizer that helps. Even though its in the basement, the smell will come up through vents and any other place it can.

  8. It could well be that your cat food is causing the smell, my dry food smells very strong indeed.  The best thing to do is to train your cats into mealtimes, so you only need to leave the food out for half an hour twice the day.  In addition, rather than leaving the food in the bag, purchase a large plastic air-tight container, so all the smell is contained when it's not being used.

If your cats don't take to meal times, you could move the food down to the basement too.  You'll just need to keep it far away from the litter tray or, if there's not enough room, put food on a table with a litter tray under the table, so the food area remains clear of the litter.

  9. are you chucking it in the bin at all??

if i leave human food or cat food in the bin it stinks after a day...

on the other hand, if it does turn out to be the kitty litter, you can get a crystal type of litter that lasts longer without the need to be changed as much and doesn't smell as bad when soiled and its not as messy when they scratch and flick it out of the tray
