Question:

Is it the end of the road for my fantail goldfish?

Hi there

Sorry I left the caps lock on so I have asked again:

I bought a fantail goldfish about 4 months ago and was well chuffed that it had lasted a long time as mine usually die within a few weeks.

Today I have noticed he has a graduating red bump from the top of his head down to about the nose and on the top of his head before the redness starts there is a milky kind of blister/spot?

Is this bad news - is he ill - and is he going to die?

  1. I think you have an Oranda and the blister/spot is normal.

Sorry not to be the bearer of bad news, but you seem to be doing things right if his headgrowth is developing. I've known plenty of people who've gone to the pet store, bought & thought they got a fantail, but then poof - it just grows into an Oranda. When they are young, they can easily get missorted at the pet store into fantail tanks.

  2. It sounds like your fish has Ulcer disease.  Your fish won't die if you use some of these treatments: Some people say Potassium Permanganate works well but you have to be very careful because it is very strong.  You can also use Melafix which also works well.  Another treatment is feeding the fish Debride medicated food for bacterial infection which I think is better because it works and it's a more natural treatment.

    hope this helps, Good luck!

  3. A goldfish should live 20 yrs if kept properly.  You need a minimum of 20 gallons for one fish with excellent filtration.  Keeping them in poor water conditions like a bowl or small tank can lead to lots of diseases.

The other possibility is that your fish is an oranda and it is starting to grow it's wen.  Google "oranda" and see if that is what is on your fish.

  4. first yu need a big tank for goldfish and you need filter for it and do a lot of water changes.  Some do water changes daily of 10 percent.

add rocksalt quarantine it if you have methylene blue add it and observe for improvement in 2 to 3 days and do water changes.  Use setteled water for 3 days in a gallon or water tank.

  5. Um...I think your dear little fantail maybe an oranda. Hehe. That may be his wen developing. Baby orandas don't have wens, but as they grow into adulthood the wen starts to develop.

Here's a picture of the starting of a wen:

If it's not a wen, then I have no clue.
