Question:

Is it the external or internal jugular vein?

While measuring the Jugular Venous Pressure, is it the internal or the external jugular vein that it's measured in? And why?

Websites don't mention as to why the internal jugular vein is chosen, some of the books that i've referred to don't even mention which one out of the two and many of my friends are under the impression that it is the external, since it is quite visible.

Hoping that someone can answer my question.

  1. im not sure of your question but i know in dier emergencies. er will use the juggler if  they cant get a good vain. like rolling vains, collasped vains. sorry i couldnt help more.

    I am a vet,dude. Humanity is the same with animals here.

  3. The internal jugular vein is preferred, as there are no valves within it that can interfere with pressure measurement between the site of exam and the right heart. the external JV does have valve(s), and therefore could give incorrect reading.
