My dad had surgery two days ago, and hes on morphine and hes acting nutty. He will just say random things that don't make much sense. They took him off of it this morning, how long does it usually take for the morphine to wear off?

  1. I was on it for a full week after major surgery, it does terrible things to your mind, but the effects fade away quickly when it is withdrawn.

  2. I had major spine surgery- was in a lot of pain. The only thing that got me out of bed was the lightning bugs in my nurses hair- "if the hospital lets nurses run around with bugs in their hair, I have to get outta here". Drug induced hallucination. In my case, it made me suck up the pain, get out of bed and walk, which was good. Who knows what your Dad is seeing? MS can do strange things.

  3. Some side-effects of morphine:

Central Nervous System: Weakness, headache, agitation, tremor, uncoordinated muscle movements, seizure, alterations of mood (nervousness, apprehension, depression, floating feelings), dreams, muscle rigidity, transient hallucinations and disorientation, visual disturbances, insomnia, increased intracranial pressure

  4. If it's an effect of the morphine and not of the surgery and anesthesia, he'll probably be OK in the morning.

  5. Morphine can make some people act crazy, hallucinate, or be very sedated.  Others don't have that reaction.

He may do better with a different pain medication if he still needs IV pain meds (fentanyl or hydromorphone might not affect him that way).   If they took him off the morphine, it may take 6 hours or more for him to get over the effects.

Older people tend to have reactions like this more frequently than younger people do.

It's not likely that he got any Versed after surgery, and if he's older, he may not have gotten any before surgery either.

Older people can also get crazy in hospitals without help from medications.  Taking them out of a familiar environment can be enough.  Giving them anesthesia, pain medication, surgery and disturbing their sleep can rally do a number on them.

Hope your dad feels better soon.  He'll probably come around and remember nothing of it.

  6. hes just tired..that dont make you like that...now demarol would..

  7. Morphine doesnt have these effects..

It is probably Versed (Midazolam) that the anesthesiologist had to give him.. it makes patientes confused and talking non sense

    Pangolin can confirm this
