  1. I would certainly be in favor of that, however, I fear that most gas is wasted in stop-n-go traffic.

In recent years, I have instituted a different tactic for my family - live very close to work and ensure that supermarkets are between work and home. I also work from home so I net about 6-7K mi per year over the past 5 years.

  2. Yes.  The research is pretty conclusive and unanimous... but then so is the research on anthropogenic global climate change so I'm sure someone will disagree.

Better yet - let's just get off the gas entirely.  I started riding my bike to work to save money and divorce myself from yet another activity that is perpetuating putting a few of my young family members in this situation.

When they come home from leave I need to be able to look them in the eye.

  3. you are never going to have any real savings until you get it thru Americans head to STAY HOME!!  Think how much fuel gets burned on nonsense....soccer practice, a movie with freinds, girl nite out etc

  4. I think that instead of giving up and sacrificing yet more of our freedoms, our government officials need to give up their perks and stop special interest groups like OIL decide what we do. I like going 80 on the freeway and it makes me really irritated when our already slow traffic in california goes slower. when you sit in traffic like i know some people do, it makes a huge difference how fast the fast lane is going and how well people merge. Cell phones are a bigger concern for me, because like i have heard others say, you just made that phone call a priority over others' lives.

  5. Rubbish.

First off all, back when we had 55mph speed limits everyone roundly ignored them.  So it did not have the desired effect.

Secondly, if people just properly maintained their vehicles (simple things like checking tire pressure regularly) we would save more gas than by reducing speeds on interstates.

Third, we can leave Iraq any time the political will exists.  The one thing has nothing to do with the other.

  6. Anybody who thinks a 55 mile an hour speed limit is a good idea has never driven from Phoenix to Albuquerque or Denver to Salt Lake City.

  7. the 55 mph speed limit didnt save gas like people thought. granted there were cars on the road then that did benefit from the slower speeds, but overall the fuel savings was not real. as for saving the lives of american soldiers, just how is slowing freeway speeds supposed to do that?
