Is it too late for 2012 or 2016?

I'm 12 and really enthusiastic about long jump, 100m sprint and cycling. I'm joining an athletics club and hoping to shine in one of these three sports. If I were to shine in one and train properly would I be able to get into the 2012 or 2016 olympic games?

  1. Qualifying competition is typically the year before the Olympics, so 2011 for the 2012 Olympics and 2015 for the 2016 Olympics.

So no, it is not too late to make the team.

  2. Generally in track and field it is college athletes, so you more than likely would be better off waiting for 2016..

    Good Luck though..

  3. You'd be able to get into the 2016...if you're good enough. Practice is the key. Train and practice EVERY DAY for hours, and you might have a shot.

Considering you'd only be 16 in 2012, you'd most likely be in 2016 or 2020 games.

  4. Sprinting is primarily a physical sport, if you have the natural speed then you will be able to do it. There is no ranking points.  In track you just have to reach the A Standard which is running a 9.85 seconds for the 100m. If you run this time, then you are in. Of course you have to condition to maintain this speed but if the talent is there, it is there.
