I am thinking about joining the Army or Marines. I am 27, turning 28 this christmas, and I love my country, and I'm willing to sacrifice for freedom. I don't know if i;ll be making the right choice. I am married but have no kids. My wife is sick and in need of medication and I wonder if the military can take care of her. I just started college, and I wish to finish it. What do you think i should do?

do i have to get fit before i join, coz right now i move like a slug.

  1. You do need to be in decent shape to go to basic.  If you go active duty, your wife will be covered by Tricare(military health insurance). You will have time to work on your degree while you're in the military, it'll take a little longer but it's doable. Every branch you can earn credits for basic and advanced training. In the Air Force I earned 20credits from the Community College of the Air Force and will have my associates degree from them as soon as I finish my general ed classes. On the flip side you can sign up for the reserves or National Guard but you won't get the health benefits but you'll be able to get assistance with school.

  2. congratulations on your choice...yes you can still join, but you will have to pass a minimal physical exam and fitness test, depending on the service you choose.

Also, since you chose the Army or Marines, the chances are that you would get sent on long deployments away from your wife, and yes, as a family member, she will receive medical care.

My suggestion would be to get in shape enough to run a mile and a half in 12 minutes or less...do at least 50 pushups and situps...and you should be OK...although if you can pass the physical and can lift weight over your head (no disabilities) they'll get you in shape when you go to basic training...it will just be easier if you already can do some things.

I'd suggest the Air Force, but that's up to you...go talk to all the recruiters.
