  1. The problem is, your chances are very, very slim that you could find the RIGHT training at this stage. Rather than listening to what "a lot of people are saying," why don't you spend some time doing your own research by reading the bios of all the professional ballet dancers that are available on company websites to see where they got their training?

I'll tell you now, they did not get their training at Miss Sally's Studio in Topeka, Kansas (or whatever the names are of your local ballet studios where you live). They attended the elite ballet schools (usually) affiliated with the professional ballet companies (a few boarding school programs such as North Carolina School of the Arts are the exception) or they graduated from the handful of top college ballet programs such as Butler, Indiana University, U of Utah, U of Oklahoma and a couple of others. If you can't submit a beautiful first arabesque photo on pointe and excel at the audition, you can't get into those programs.

Any other halfway decent pre-professional ballet program taught by former professional ballet dancers is going to expect you to be, at the very least, at the intermediate level - which means already starting pointe. The few exceptions - where you can find good (or better training) - are with the handful of programs that focus on contemporary ballet, where pointe is not emphasized or required. Such programs include Juilliard, the LINES/Dominican University BFA program, and the Ailey/ Fordham University program. But if you can manage to be accepted into those programs, don't expect to come out as a classically trained ballet dancer.

You have essentially missed the window to be a professional ballet dancer on pointe, but perhaps not as a contemporary ballet dancer.

  2. Well how old are you?

  3. Honestly... probably.  that is if you haven't been training now.  However there are those few occasions where it happens.  But if you REALLY REALLY want to do this.  Go for it.  Dream!!  Do what makes you happy! :)
