Question:

Is it too late for me to be an Olympic athlete?

I'm 19 and kinda out of shape. I have average endurance but I'm a bit overweight. I can walk about 5-7 miles without being dead if that gives you an idea of my endurance level.

If I start now and change my lifestyle around to be healthier, eat, sleep, and breathe a sport for the next few years would it be possible for me to get into the 2016-2020 Olympics?

I always wanted to do this but my family is less than supportive of any type of dream. Is it too late to start now?

I know most of the athletes are young...around my age or younger but there are a few older athletes in there.

Also I have no particular sport in mind. Are there any suggestions to a good one that would be easiest for me to start with little to no experience?

  1. It is never to late to try and achieve your dreams. If you are truly dedicated to achieving this goal you will have to put in countless hours of training and will likely have to sacrifice many things in your life.

    Good luck.

  2. nope nope... it's not too late..

as long as you have the right will..

as the old saying goes... if there's a will, there's a way...

    --------------------------------------...

now... when it comes to the particular sport, don't let us dictate

which it should be.. sure..probably take a few sports suggestion

from here and try them out to determine which one you like and enjoy the most..

cuz once you start trainin for the olympics all your gonna do, most

probably 6X a week and 8 hours a day, is that sport....

so bettah be something you're very very interested in and hve fun while doin it also

  3. It all depends on the sport, gymnastics, then it's probably too late.  Even though that German gymnast is 33, she's been competing in the sport for all her live.  But if you go with something like archery, then you're not even near being too old.  Butch Johnson is almost 60.  Most endurance sports actually have older athletes, most athlete peaks in the early 30's in endurance sports like triathlon and marathon etc.

  4. I believe that the saying ''If you put your mind to it you can achieve anything is very true'' Is very correct. Take michael Jordin and Thomas Edison for example. Michael jordan was rejected from his high schools basketball team with his coach saying to him "You will never be a basketball star. He went home and cried to his father but then practised like h**l and became, probably, the best basketball player of all time. And thomas edison was sent home from school with his teacher saying You are too dim. Don't waste our time anymore. And look what he ended up doing. So I believe that if you put your mind to it after being told you can't do it you will be able to do whatever.

P.S You will never be able to do it no matter how hard you try. ;) Hope this helps!!! I'll be watching for your name.

  5. I think you ought to find a sport you like, set some less ambitious short term goals, and enjoy the sport for its own sake.   I think if you ask most Olympians, you would find that's what they did.   Living and dying for a fleeting and nebulous one-in-a-million goal is tough to maintain day to day.

Could you make the Olympics?  Its a long shot of course, but in endurance sports like triathlon and distance running, athletes don't reach their peak until their 30's.
