Is it too late for me to learn to play guitar?

Question

Im 18, got an electric guitar for my 16th birthday but never really learnt how to play it properly. I'd like to teach myself, cant realy afford lessons as Im a struggling student lol. Is it too late for me to pick it up?? Any tips to get me started would be much appreciated. Thank you =]

it's never too late... I taught my self piano at 16 - no lessons, just devotion. you'll thank yourself - good luck. Check youtube, all types of starter lessons for LOTS of instruments.

I would say that it is never too late for you to learn how to do something...especially learn how to play the guitar.

I would start with some tabs.

It is not when you start a project but what you do with it that matters.

It is never to late to learn : ) !!  Just learn the main chords, like G,C,D, etc. etc.

If you aren't dead, then it is never too late. Is it too late to be a rock star? No, but it is getting close.

For internet lessons, I suggest cyberfret.com (it's free and there's a crapload of stuff for you)

If you want to spend money, go out and buy Teach Yourself Visually Guitar. To further your learning in notes (if you want to), buy Mel Bay's Complete Method to Modern Guitar.

For tabs, ultimate-guitar.com is best.

Even though you'll find these tips online or in the first book I recommended, I'll type up out here:

-Practice makes permanent, so practice-or at least try to-practice everyday

-You will get frustrated so take a breather (5 minutes) before tackling whatever tough spot you're working on to play, again

When all is said and done, the greatest books or internet lessons don't compare to actually studying with a private teacher. Books and the internet don't talk back, so you don't know what you're doing wrong of if you're actually doing something wrong. Eventually you will need to take lessons.

It's never too late. You should be able to find some websites that can get you started. Just do a web search.

It's never too late to learn guitar!  Umm you can buy any book at a music store to start out with.  But what is extremely important is learning CHORDS.  You can't do anything till you learn those.  It would be best for you to find someone who can play and just have them teach you chords to start out with.  Then you can move on to tabs.. those are all over the internet.

It is not too late to pick up a guitar and learn it. I would take some lessons this way you know how to read music and you get a natural feel for it. Then afterwards when you have enough experience on the fret board teach yourself. Trust me i started playing when i was 15 years old and I am pretty fluent in guitar playing. Just keep practicing and never let up on it, it will become second nature like breathing
