I am a 16 year old male and I have wanted to do ballet for such a long time. Since I was a little boy I wanted to do ballet. I remember saying I wanted to be a ballet dancer when I grow up. So now I really want to do this and I am wondering if it is too late? A lot of people tell me that I even look like a ballet dancer. They say I have excellent posture. I have registered to start ballet classes and they start this week! I can do something when I put my mind to it. I want to get really good with ballet and even if it will take me hours and hours and hours of training and practising I will do it! So, I just want to know what everyone thinks. Is it too late?

  1. what kind of shape are you in?

you need way more than posture.

you need strength and flexibility and balance and rhythm and practice.

while it's not necessarily too late, it's going to be quite hard to catch up with people who have been doing it for several years.

the good news is that it's probably somewhat easier for a male than a female.

  2. It is never too late!!!  Follow your dreams!!!

    Good luck!!!!

  3. Ballet is more than just a good posture. It's about grace, strength, endurance, determination, desire, and passion.

It is never too late to start ballet, though, and if you want to do it, go right ahead. However, if you are thinking about going into a professional ballet career, it's going to be very hard. Most professionals have started ballet since they were in the freaking uterus and they have studied other types of dances (most likely) and were on pointe by the age of at least 12. I'm not saying that it's impossible, I'm saying that it will be incredibly hard for you to make up those 16 years and still become a professional.

If you're not looking too seriously into ballet profession, you're perfectly fine. I know people who have started when they were 20! So 16 is definitely fine. Just practice hard and be persistent. Without desire, there is no improvement in ballet. Put in hard work and passion in it and you're sure to get off on the right track =)

    Good luck!

P.S. I emphasize again...it's NEVER too late for anyone to do anything.

  4. It'll be difficult if you are thinking of going professional. But to do it for fun, it is never too late to start. Ballet challenges you physically, mentally and emotionally. The satisfaction you get out of perfecting the steps is priceless.

Do go for it. You won't regret it.

  5. Boys can start later than girls in ballet because their technique isn't expected to be as strong. So go for it, but you'll have to work hard and you shouldn't wait any longer because you're already starting late.

  6. It is most definitely not too late to start ballet. Although you won't be up to par with other dancers your age, you should still dedicate yourself to it if that's what you really want. You must realize it might be a struggle in the beginning but always keep trying. If your that serious about it I suggest going to a teacher who trains well so you can understand your muscles better.

And I'm so glad you decided to do ballet. There are never enough boy dancers in the ballet world. :) That makes me so happy =D

  7. I wish you luck. But I think it is. I am not sure you quite understand how much goes into training to be a ballet dancer.
