Question:

Is it too late for my pecan tree?

Bark is peeling off the north side. It had an injury 4 years ago, and that limb was cut off. It seems to be the source of the problem, but the problem now is a streak of bare tree trunk clear to the ground. It still has leaves and is producing pecans.

We are in west Texas, with mostly mild winters with brief periods of freezing weather between mid December and early April.

  1. Coat the north side with a tree sealer, pruning sealer to keep insects and other vermin out of hard center.

Tree is suffering from a effect brought on by excessive water during cold temps below freezing and dry hot temps during summer.

Consider a tree wrap, replace warp and treat with sealer yearly till healed.

May take as high 5 to 7 years to heal.

Tree is naturally sending sap and water to damaged area to heal itself.

It is struggling with the the the exposure to the elements, sun, dry, wet, cold, insects and dry rotting fungus.

It wants to live, tell it you care and are willing to help it, they do better, sing to it, it will respond to your love.

  2. As long as there is a continuous strip of bark, and the tree is not girdled - bark gone around entire circumference of the tree - you should be ok.  Maybe some reduced vigor, but I'll bet you get lots of pecans.

Probably will not kill the tree.
