Question:

Is it too late for my watermelons?

It is July 24th and my watermelon plant just produced a tiny melon. And my other plant hasn't produced yet, but looks like its about to any day now.

My question is: How long does the tiny melon take to grow to a full melon? I feel like its been forever! Are we going to eat watermelons this year or is it too late?

  1. Watermelon are some of the slowest-growing curcurbits.  Like pumpkin, some plant varieties take up to 120 days till harvest.  Keep the plants watered, the growing fruit protected from the direct soil, and plenty of warmth.

The below link is from your state's extension office. Extension offices are in cooperation with state universities and work with the communities for free advice.  You can ask them all your watermelon questions and you will get good, local advice.

I work for the extension office in Arizona.

  2. It depends on where you are.  In Texas it is not too late.  If you're in Montana, it is probably too late to get a good crop.  Watermelon like lots of sun and heat.
