Question:

Is it too late for tomatoes?

I asked about tomato plants about a month ago. I replanted the plants in top soil and have been using miracle gro. They are growing very nicely now, but still have no blossoms. Since it's August, is it too late to hope for tomatoes?

  1. in a greenhouse  its not too late(flick the flower stalks every day or spray with a fine mist to increase polination success)

    outside its probably too late

dont use fertiliser until they have flowered and the first tomatoes are showing

  2. That depends where you are.  I start my tomatoes indoors in April (NYC area) and they go out in May.  Most varieties take 55-90 days

  3. Your problem is that your using all purpose miracle grow on them..this is a no no ..it is loaded with nitrogen which works on the leaves and gives you little or no fruit at all...start fertilizing with miracle grow bloom booster which drops the amount of nitrogen content and increases the phospherous and pottasium content..also sprinkle a teaspoon of epsom salt per foot of plant hiegth on them and water it in..here are some links concerning this..and my garden pics..

    Heres the bloom booster

This concerns epsom salt on toamtoes and other veggies..

  4. You do not give the variety of tomato, the conditions in which they have been planted and where you live, so I have to speculate a little. If you are in the UK and have the plants outdoors, I am sorry, but unless we have a sunny, mild autumn it seems unlikely that you will get fruit to ripen on the plant. If they are in a greenhouse, they have better chances. I live in Suffolk, UK and I ate my first outdoor toms from my garden today. They were planted out into growbags as one foot tall plants late April. I am a great fan of peat free growbags as I am never sure what nutrient mix is in my topsoil.

I note that you use Miracle Grow. It has a "secret miracle formula", so I don't know what's in it, but feeding tomatoes on food with high nitrogen and not enough potassium can lead to lots of geen leaf growth without developing flowers. If the ads are to be believed, Miracle Grow should be OK, but I would still switch as soon as possible to a proprietary tomato food, such as Tomorite, to ensure you have the right balance of nutrients.

Even so, don't despair! If some fruit is starting to ripen in September, bring it in onto the kitchen windowsill and see them redden up. A hard frost will eventually kill off the plant, but until then, keep on harvesting the semi-ripe fruit and see how they go. Finally when the frost arrives, harvest all the green fruit and make chutney!
