Is it too late for volleyball?

i am going to enter my high school as a sophomore; and i really want to play volleyball. During lunch we could play in the gym or eat in the courtyard or cafeteria. I passed on lunch to go play volleyball. All the guys said i should try out. And they passed me the ball whenever it was serving time. I hit every ball that came to me and i personally think i'm good at it. I want to try out for volleyball this year, But i don't know any of the terms. I can only serve underhand, is that allowed? and i don't know any of the rotations and when the other team gets the ball. Am i too dumb to play volleyball or should i try out?
