Hey,

This question might seem silly but...I am turning 29 now and working in the office, like many of us, have a BS in Economics and other non-medicine credits..But, since I ve been always interested in eye treatment (mostly becauese I myself have issues with eyes that non of the doctors can explain) I start considering changing my career. I dont know why but it just stuck in my mind. It just happend. I am considering a profession of optometrist.

The only question is....Is it too late to start everything over at the age of 29? Especialy in medical field. And how long will it take to become an optometrist. There are only 16 accredited schools in US and its very hard to get into.

Thanks for any advices to this strange question ))

  1. It's too late when you're dead.  Seriously!  If you want to become an optometrist then go for it.  The fact that you already have a degree will be a big point in your favor when you apply to go to school -- they'll see that you have the discipline to stick with it.

P.S.:  My understanding is that it takes 8 years to become an optometrist.

  2. Try contacting the 16 accredited schools you mentioned and ask each about their enrollment policy.  How much college level biology did have, on your way to the BS in Econ.

You'll probably have to go to med school, get into an  internship program and then, specialize in optometry.

If you really willing to go through 5 to 8 years of training, and the pressure associated with it, then age should not matter!

Best of luck to you, either way!

  3. 29 is not too old to start training in another career.  You've already got a degree so that shows your intelligent ; so go for it.  Sorry I don't know how long it will take.

    Good Luck
