Question:

Is it too late to follow my heart?

2 years have passed since I finished the Swedish equivalence of high school, and I've been pretty much slacking off ever since. I just not sure what to do with my life.

What I REALLY want is to perform on stage. Maybe be an actress or a singer, or be in musicals or theatre or something. But I don't know anything about acting except from a few school plays (like, 10 years ago) and I really can't sing. And I'm pretty shy.

I also like drawing, and I'm good at it, but not good enough. I'd have to practice for a few years until I could have a shot of getting into an art University, but I think I could do it. But becoming an illustrator or something would be a pretty lonely job I imagine, and I want to be around people!

I'm slightly interested in nature and the environment, and I have a pretty good shot at getting aboard an education like that... but I don't really want to.

Is it really too late to try acting and/or singing? What can I do to pursue this dream? Should I? (I'm 21).

  1. Hi Loveless...  Sorry to say... but you sound very down on yourself.  :(.    Let me answer your question like this:   If your heart is still beating,  it is not too late to follow it.   And if you don't try to follow it,  you will be saying the rest of your life...  Oh.... it's too late for me to do that.   An attempt at trying... even once... even failing (though if you work hard enough, that won't happen) is so worth a lifetime of regret for not giving it a chance.    If you want to act and sing,  you have to go to where that is happening.   Start slow... like at community theater...  Take classes... work hard and have fun.   Get a voice coach...  work hard and have fun.   Let your instructors tell you if you should try a different avenue.  Don't go deciding that yourself... as you are not the expert.  I think you sound so very artistic and you have a desire to make it bloom.  Do what you want to do... and in the meantime,  you can foster a hobby which involves being creative.  Try photography... take a few pictures, print a few up,  frame them and hang them on the wall.  You are valuable and your art should be displayed to prove it.   Be positive for sure.   Every morning I wake up to say "Something wonderful is going to happen to me, today."  Don't know what it is... I can't wait to see.  I am never disappointed.   Girl!!!  Seize the Day!!

  2. Following your heart is just that, nothing can stop you from truly following your heart at any age.  But listen closely and don't be fooled and get caught up in the scene, you will always remember what the true goal is, fulfillment of your hopes and dreams.

  3. it's never too late to begin acting...and if a director hosting an audition is looking for a specific type of person...but you could always change their mind like Dustin Hoffman in the movie "The Graduate" he wasthe complete opposite of what the director was looking for, but he changed his mind and got the part...so good luck and persue your dreams...as wayne gretzky once said "You miss a 100% of the chances you don't take"

  4. 21??   your life just started! do what you desire!

  5. I would highly consider getting into voice acting. It's very lucrative if you are good and the nice thing about it is you don't have to be in front of anyone. As you build up your resume and skills you can branch out into theater. If you like drawing, consider graphic design where illustration isn't completely necessary but it's a nice plus and you are usually within a team environment and have money.

  6. No girl it's never ever too late :)
