Question:

Is it too late to gain your budgies' trust?

Hello. I have three budgies. Two of them are 2 yrs old and the other one is 5 months old (I recently just got him). I have recently read that training them to go on your hand is first priority before letting them out of the cage. I would usually let the cage open for them to fly around. I have my budgies for 5 months. Is it too late for me to train them? I have three other cockatiels. It seems to me that I have been giving more attention to them. What do I do now?

  1. You can always train a budgie no matter how old it is. But the younger it is, the easier. It will take more time to train it, but it is completely worth it! :)    One thing to remember is NEVER grab the budgie!!!!! (what i mean is dont pick it up by grabing it, b/c it is one of the biggest fears of parakeets and budgies) Always let the bird come to you! Dont force it to let you hold it!

    Hope this Helped!

  2. Budgies are really easy to tame at any age just handle them be gentle and paitent. Males will tame easier and Females may nip a bit...

  3. Training works the fastest and best when done while your budgie is still very young, but budgies are smart little things. Read up on budgie training, and most of all be patient and persistent. Offer lots of yummy treats too! They'll come around eventually, it just might take alot longer than if you had trained them as babies.

  4. Budgies get wild fast when they are not hand reared. If they were tame before you got them then yes, in time and with patients you will gain their trust, but if they were parent raised untame birds then it is about hopeless. you need to find someone that breeds them and ask them to handfeed one for you or teach you how and let you do it yourself. It really is sad that almost alswys breeders let the parent birds raise budgies and they dont mess with handfeeding them out of the nest, becuase a tame handfed budgie can be a great companion bird, and they can even learn to talk rather well with an extensive vocabulary. But insead most end up parent raised and wild, to live their lives in cages as a display pet.

  5. 2 years old is a ltitle difficult, but it can be train. You can make it trust you by talking to it softly and trying to hand feed it. To get it to step up on your finger, thrust your finger lightly towards its chest and it would step up automatically.

My avatar shows a budgie which is mine- i train it by just putting my finger in front of it and it hopped up. For training it i talk to it but failed and he ended up saying the tone of the word i taught him. :(

  6. Never too late, it just might take you a bit more time.  Being gentle and not pushing them is a good place to start.
