Question:

Is it too late to get short term disability insurance if I have not been diagnosed yet and could wait awhile?

I think I injured my rotator cuff but it only bothers me while using the throwing motion. I could wait a few months to see the doctor if that would help.

  1. Hi there,

    Generally you have to be completely unable to perform your exisiting job duties due to the injury you've sustained.

    If you can still work and only have occasional pain due to this problem, you would not meet the criteria for the short-term disability coverage.

    A physician has to certify that you're no longer able to perform any work duties due to the injury.  In this case you're not disabled completely, so you wouldn't qualify.

    Hope the information is helpful.

  2. Too late. It's now a pre-existing condition.

    This is an example of what I've said in other answers about insurance;

    Insurance is for the unknown and unexpected. That's why we need to be protected BEFORE something happens. If we knew WHEN something was going to happen, we could wait until a few days before, then buy the policy. But we don't have that luxury of knowing beforehand when we are going to sick or injured, or even die.

    If you don't have life insurance, I recommend that you purchase a policy as soon as possible, from a local agent.

  3. Sorry, but I'm afraid it is too late to get insurance to cover this situation.  This would come under the "pre-existing conditions" clause because the doctors and insurance company would be able to determine that you were already injured at the time you purchased the policy.  Thus coverage would be denied.
