Would I be considered too old by a lot of employers for an entry level position within their company?

  1. Hi Jim...

It is NEVER too late. Many older / nontraditional students find themselves leading their classes because of the maturity factor. Also, older students tend to beat themselves up if they are not PERFECT. Learning becomes more holistic making it more difficult to focus on the specific elements of the tests.

The one thing to consider is your family...are you financially able to attend classes? Can you get flex school hours around your work schedule?

I would suggest a life coach to help you through the fine elements of attending school.

  2. Entry level, yes.  If you are going back to school you need to go for a skill that is marketable.

I am 39 and am quitting in 6 months to go to nursing school to get my BSN.  It will take me three to four semesters, then I should be able to get a job paying roughly what I make now.  But I will be doing something I enjoy, and will have potential to go further than I can in my current industry.

    Good Luck!

  3. As a matter of fact, you better be contented with what you have now. It isn't easy to find a job at 40+ let alone get a career change. It is abit too late, not to be too harsh i suppose?

  4. I don't think it is at all!

I'm counting on being able to go to school once I ge a little older, because I cant afford to go now.

Only you know how far your willing to go to get where you want to be, so If your know you may not ever make it, but your willing to try anyway...GO FOR IT!

  5. I changed careers when I was 43.  You have to be little more persistent than younger folks - I not only filled out the application, but went in and introduced myself, briefly, to the guy who did the hiring (Because I knew my resume did not have anything on it that related to the work).  I had a very short conversation, telling him why he should hire me sometime (I had just missed a recent round of hiring).  Then I went back or called about once every 4 to 6 weeks, letting him know I still wanted to work there.  Often enough so he'd remember me the next time he needed someone, but not so often that I was annoying.  About 6 months later - he called and hired me.

    Go for it.

  6. I suppose it would depend on the career you want to go into.  Some are very discriminating about age.  I managed a business for 25 years and I liked to hire older mature individuals.    I found people 30 years and older to be more dependable and willing to work, not just put in their time. Also younger individuals are more likely to quit and move on to something new, where as older people are looking for stability and tend to stay with a company.
