Question:

Is it too late to negotiate salary and vacation?

I had a job interview, and I gave them my salary expectations, I knew I went too low after I said it. I asked them after I gave them my number what the range is , and my number was right in the middle. They called me a few days later and asked if I was firm, I said no, am willing to negotiate, what were you thinking? they said a number about 10K lower than mine. I said well can we meet halfway? so they gave me a figure... I said I would be willing to consider that. They called me back for a second interview. I have a feeling I will get the job, but I dont like the salary they got me down too. I remember that I said AM WILLING to consider that, so if I get the offer, can I ask to rework the numbers, and negotiate vacation time also... I dont think it is too late, but I dont want to blow my chance at getting the job, how should I ask ? I already have a plan but would appreciate suggestions .. Thanks

  1. your desired salary may not fit the range of the specific position - that job may not be worth the kind of money you are looking for. each specific position with each company has a certain value salary range to THAT company and rarely will they exceed it - they'll just keep looking for someone who will work for the money they want to pay.  even after they give you a written offer, you can always negotiate - no guarantee you will win...

  2. Did you talk about vacation time in the first interview or at any time indicate your expectations?  Hopefully no.

If you said you would be willing to consider the number they negotiated on the phone with you (let's call it $60,000) then I think you need to accept that if they offer it (I'm often on the hiring end and I would be annoyed if you tried to move it up after we discussed).  But I think you're safe in saying that you are willing to accept the rate of $5,000 per month for the first 3 months or 6 months, and that after you had proven your value, you would want to be paid xxxx.

Also then indicate the vacation you want - you might ask for more in this case than you had intended because it appears as if these guys are negotiators.  That is, ask for 4 weeks and settle for 3 weeks.  Those details are usually negotiable in most companies.

Make sure you get this stuff in writing - particularly if you are able to negotiate a better salary at a specified time - 3 months after date of hire.

    Good luck.
