Question:

Is it too late to plant pumpkins?

We planted pumpkins in July, but some type of worm is eating the vine. So, yesterday, we took a chance and planted some more. The package says 100 germination days which will put it at full maturity around the first or second week of November. We live in southern Virginia. Will they do okay?

  1. They should be fine. You'll probably have smaller pumpkins than if you planted earlier. But, you're right on the edge of when you can plant them. I would suggest, however, that you go to a nursery and get starter plants. These are at about the 3 week stage, which means you'll have ripe pumpkins just in time for Halloween.

  2. Probably not.  They may grow, but probably won't mature and ripen properly.  Have you used Sevin dust on your present vines to kill the pests?

  3. If you are in zone 5A it's to late. If you are in a warmer climate it is possible. But they may not mature.
