My daughter, the 2nd of 6 and only girl, is consistently sliding down the academic scale. I have tried multiple approaches to helping her and still the grades are not good. She is extremely bright and i don't know what to do. I thought if I HS'd her it might help with the distration factor. any advise? has anyone started later like this? thanks.

  1. I agree - this is a great time to pull her.  My 5th/6th grade son loves homeschooling, and a lot of his ps friends have asked their parents to homeschool because they're jealous of his schedule and coursework :-)

He is also easily distracted when working in a group, so homeschooling is the perfect solution for him.  He is also now more independent in his work, so instead of having to sit with him on *everything*, I can go through the lessons, assign him work, and set him loose to research and create.  I'm always there if he needs help, but he's enjoying the independence.

  2. Not too late at all. I myself started homeschooling three months into 9th grade, and i've had TONS of success with it since then.

  3. At that age, the biggest drawback is stubborness. I didn't "homeschool" at this age yet, but my step-daughter came to live with us last summer instead of going to summer school. Once she understood that we were serious and expected her to do her best, things got better real quick.

  4. It is never too late. You should have the teacher keep an eye on her. Every day, after school, go to the teacher when you pick her up, and ask how she's done. Give her a dollar after every day that she has progressed in her behavior. Give her penalties. Like, if she has been getting a B or less on her tests, you have her stay home on the weekends, and tutor her in that area. Buy books that teach her things. Make sure that they are 7th grade level, so she gets some challenging problems. If she hasnt been listnening in class, cut hertv privileges to 30 minutes a day.

  5. Sixth grade is a fine time to start homeschooling.  It is never too late to begin.  We have friends who began homeschooling their son halfway through 11th grade.  We began in the middle of 4th grade.

You cannot go back.  Start now, so in a year you won't be wondering if it's okay to start homeschooling in 7th grade.  You can do it!  Be well.

  6. Sixth grade is precisely the time I started home schooling my daughter, with huge success! I pulled her out in the middle of the second semester. She is in 10th now and we never looked back. She actually takes a couple of classes at the Public High school here and is doing great. Not only academically, but socially.

    Blessings

  7. My boyfriend started homeschooling in 7th grade. It worked really well for him.

    Go for it! :)

  8. Check your state laws for homeschooling.

We started several weeks into 8th grade.   Our state is home school friendly and we can create our own curriculum.   We started with a few used books, internet, television and video.

There is a wealth of free information and resources online.

Our success story is that our son, who the school said was performing at his potential and not learning very much,  is now learning.
