Is it true, if i unknowingly deposited a counterfeit check I could be arrested?

Is it true, if I unknowingly deposited a counterfeit check I could be arrested or maybe prosecuted? Why? That doesn't seem fair if I didn't know any better.

It would have to be a pretty extreme case before you did any jail time for a counterfit check. It has happened; but it's pretty rare.

No.  But some of the scams out there are so obvious that it is assumed that if the person is intelligent enough to have a bank account they are intelligent enough to realize such an obvious scam.  If you deposited a bogus check and spent the funds you will be required to repay them, but will probably not be prosecuted.
