Is it true, we can have as much energy as we like, so long as it's green? If not, what are the limitations?

This is probably not a question for deniers, my starting point is that Anthropogenic Global Warming is true!

Also, I am not thinking of individuals, corporations or nations with this question, but of the planet as a whole.

It's not our energy use that causes AGW but the greenhouse gasses that result from the types of energy we are using. So if we are to solve the problem we need to phase out the polluting types of energy in favour of others.

I realise that many of these are less efficient, more expensive, or have other environmental conseques, but wouldn't it be better to live with these rather than with an over-warm planet?

Solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, nuclear, even wood burning is carbon neutral so long as you replant!

From a global warming perspective, there would be no need to limit these as they wouldn't contribute to AGW. We could have as much as we like!

It's not the energy that causes pollution, it's the way that the energy is produced that causes pollution. Burning fossil fuels releases a great amount of greenhouse gases, while nuclear energy produces non degradable substances. People use these solutions because they are the easiest solutions to producing electricity. Fossil fuels are non renewable resouces and we will run out one day, and we will have to resort to another resource like solar power and tidal and geothermal. When used together, these resources can provide us with all the energy that we need. And since they use renewable resources, and don't produce pollution, we could have an infinite source of electricity.

Not exactly. We can not grow an infinite amount of wood unless we have water on the ground. Replanting alone does not work in drought stricken forest land. And then we have people trying to grow food interfering with the number of hectares available for forestry. There appears to be a competition for land and water.

Global warming causes our drought situation, but merely replanting trees does not solve it. Trees must have water to grow, to absorb CO2.

The trees already have lots of CO2. It is water they need.

Solar suffers from the problem of competition for land too. Now if we were covering all the desert regions of the world with solar panels, so that we do not create competition for food growing land we might be able to provide most of our current demand for electricity, but we need to be irrigating those arid lands, and growing trees on them. We can not remove CO2 from the atmosphere economically unless we deploy water and trees on land not already in crop production.

Nuclear power does have a potential to produce extremely large amounts of energy with only heat as an unwanted emission. That heat allows the atmosphere to hold more water vapour, a GHG,  This says we have to use with discretion, not an infinite supply.  Next, Nuclear fuel is not immediately available in infinite quantities, and we have not really developed fusion reactors.

You do allude to cost, and we tend to object when we have to pay more for energy than the benefits of the energy. So, it becomes a moot point that theoretically we could have infinite energy if we can not afford to buy it. The fact that some other form of energy would cost more does not make any given energy a buy in,

I think we should avoid promises of virtually infinite energy and stick to all we currently foresee needing, and keep on working to reduce that.

Sometimes green energy is not so green.  

In Australia, the Tasmanian (state) government built a series of dams for hydroelectric generation.  Each one flooded areas of old growth forrest and reduced the habitat available for species unique to Tasmania.  This caused a national outcry in 1983, the federal goverment stepped in and classified the area for the proposed Franklin River dam as a national park.  A high court challenge followed and the project was eventually cancelled.  

Anything humans do has some impact on the environment.  We can't build thousands of square kilometers of solar collector arrays without effecting the ecology of the areas.  Even in deserts there are still plants and animals which will be displaced.

You don't have alienate the skeptics by saying what you said at the beginning of this question. Just because we don't believe in exactly what you believe in doesn't mean we don't care about the environment or our energy needs. Another thing you should remember is that anything we do impacts our environment, so we have to be a little more careful on what we do.

For example: Building a dam to harness the power of water will create a lake, so sometimes instead of building a dam a lock and dam might be better, since it doesn't create a lake, but you can still generate electricity. (We have one on the Mississippi river in Minneapolis and I was taken on a tour of it when I was a kid.)

There are trade-offs with any energy system.  Wind turbines aren't necessarily attractive to look at.  Solar can consume a lot of real-estate. Tidal and/or hydro can affect sea life.  Geothermal .... I don't really see any downsides to that, relatively speaking.

But overall, there's no reason for humanity to limit their energy usage, so long as they don't mind the negatives (e.g. ugly wind turbine) and the energy production doesn't significantly harm the environment.  

Those who think addressing global warming requires an end to private vehicles, vacations to the Bahamas, entertainment centers, or any of the other power hungry pleasures of modern life, are simply wrong. Not that it's as easy as turning off a light, but we can sustain modern lifestyles and replace our carbon-based energy system with clean renewable energy.
