Is it true Aucklanders are rude and unfriendly and that New Zealand is backwards?

I was shocked at a recent party when a group of people who claim to have lived over there came up with that description of NZ and Auckland. What are your thoughts?

i remember reading an article from the oxford university, and how advanced New Zealand is for a small country, as for aucklanders they probably are rude, but NZ certainly is not backwards. They appear to be a very advanced country. They were actually responsible for the splitting of the atom, without which we would not have nuclear power, i think the australians are backwards, they are primarily from irish convict backgrounds, whereas New Zealand is made up of the aristocracies of british stock

Individually most of them are nice people but some aren't. Just the same as anywhere else on earth I imagine. They can be rude motorists though and some shop assistants etc could do with an attitude adjustment. And not backwards at all. We have our small towns that are like being in a time warp but again, the same as anywhere. Auckland just got voted 6th friendliest city in the world which is great. New York got number 1 though which might say something since everyone talks about how rude they are.

I am a New Zealander and have lived in New Zealand for 24 years (10 in Auckland), Australia for 3 years, and Switzerland for 3 years. I currently live in New Zealand.

Aucklanders are less friendly than South Islanders, however even Aucklanders are very open, often a little too open.

NZ is very advanced commercially, but admittedly is very backwards politically. If things don't get better soon we will see more and more flocking off for better shores. I will probably join them.

We are suffering a brain drain, and as an educated NZ'er, I understand why we all leave.

New Zealand is my top destination right now. I love it to death! I research it all the time. I hear that everyone around New Zealand is very nice to visters or just people who live there. It's got all I want there. I love mountains and I LOVE the beach. New Zealand seems as if it's the perfect place to live and just relax and do whatever. My role model Lucy Lawless also lives there part of her time. (Aka:Xena:Warrior Princess) Haha!

have a free health service

and as for this NEW idea in the rest of the world about cars driven on gas [ for the yanks this does not mean petrol ]i drove one in N Z over twenty years ago

there record on environmental issues is second to none

have heard people give opinions on N Z who have never been there

one downer the gangs in N Z can be pretty vicious

Aucklanders are far from rude and unfriendly and i know this because i used to be an aucklander last year but i live in Australia now coz my parents had their reasons to drag me here.

well as far as my experience in new zealand went, it was great! if i had the choice to go back i would. you should really visit NZ coz it's just so nice being there. instead of just listening to a random group of people at a party about it. they can have their own opinion. but you gotta see it for yourself to believe it that NZ is not 'backwards' and the people there are NOT rude and unfriendly.
