Nobody knows when the world is going to end.  There is some old calendar/almanac system (I forget which culture it was from) and it ends in 2012, and it has been fairly accurate so far, so that's why people think the world might end then.  But there have been tons of other dates that people thought the world might end, and we're still here, aren't we?  Remember how so many people thought the world would end in the year 2000?  There is no real scientific evidence that says the world might end in 2012.  So don't worry about it!

End of the world in 2012: utter nonsense.

The main reason why some people would believe that is because the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012.

It the same hysteria that people went through during the Y2K scare, which is just another case of millennialism.

You can be sure another one of these hysterias will occur in 2038, when the UNIX system time resets.

A hysteria like this happens every so often (see eschatology) yet none of them has been right so far. :p
