It depends upon the royal family and how far back in history you wish to go! In ancient Ireland among the minor kings the king of Clan Conaill would inaugurate his reign by public copulation with a white mare!! They did this as late as the end of the 12th Century,long after Ireland was Christianized by Saint Patrick! I read this in Thomas Cahill's book "How the Irish Saved Civilization".
