I was prescribed glasses for short vision about 7 years ago and apart from driving I haven't really used them much. a family friend tells me I should because my eyesight will gradually get worse, is this true? I've only been to the optometrist once about 3 years after getting the glasses and they said my sight had not changed.i really don't feel comfortable wearing glasses because they feel unnatural and cumbersome (kind of like always having to wear boots) but if it means my eyesight will stabilize, I wouldn't mind doing it.thanks for any insight.

  1. from what i've heard your vision will get worse on its own naturally no matter how often you wear your glasses.  I, like you, have glasses for distance vision and usually just wore them for driving, etc...now, i notice that they really make my eyes less tired in general so i wear them a whole lot more...i think my eyes have become more dependant on them for computer work because i realize how much my eyes were straining before...now that they know what it's SUPPOSED to look like, they want to see clearly all the time haha

  2. Actually it is the opposite way.  Your eyesight will either gruadually get worse with our without glasses or stabilize because this is natural.  However, if you wear glasses all the time your eyes become dependent on the glasses and seeing better.  Hence, while wearing glasses your eyesight will become even worse on top of the natural changes.  If you don't wear glasses, your eyes don't have that dependency and you kind of learn to deal without it (but they won't get better).

This happened to me, I could kind of see without glasses, then decided to wear them all the time and soon thereafter my vision noticebaly worsened.

  3. Some people believe that if a doctor prescribes glasses for a patient, ones eyes will get better.  Some believe the glasses will cause the eyes to get worse.

Why don't we sue the doctors for ruining our vision?

  4. with what i heard if you were perscibed them then you should wear or as long as you arent squinting

  5. No, wearing or not wearing glasses has NO connection with eyesight getting worse or stabilizing at a point.

I was born with a bad eyesight, one of my eyes having a diopter no. -5.00 in my early childhood.

I got a pair of glasses, put them in my drawer and forgot about them and kept working with the right eye of mine.

When at age 20 I got a government job in the defense ministry, I was supposed to go for a medical check up, and to my astonishment, both my eyes measured -2.25 diopter.

One eye worsened, the other corrected itself!

I lived with that eyesight (without glasses!) till I was 53 years old.

On December 12, 2004; as I was standing waiting for my wife in Sarojini Nagar Market, New Delhi, India; I suddenly felt my body was stretching itself in a way incomprehensible to my own self.

And lo, every single thing in the field of my sight went crystal clear!

    I held my breath.

All through my life, I had been a victim to myopia (nearsightedness) with a refractive index of -2.25D.

    I could not believe myself.

I closed my lids and took a deep breath. As I opened them, my sight was back to its myopic blur again.

    But my body remembered.

I immediately repeated that awesome incomprehensible stretch and again it was there.

    I was seeing! ...Crystal clear!!

My gaze had grown a glow in it!

For me, it was nothing less than a miracle.

I was 53 years old then. But being a research oriented person as I always had been all through my life, I immediately decided to take it up as a personal research project in the field of vision therapy and overall mind body health using my own body as my laboratory for the experiments of ophthalmology and opening chakras; and my sight as the final test of my vision therapy as well as my total mind body health.

  6. Wearing glasses is to correct  your vision while you are wearing them. Without glasses your vision are not corrected but I don't think glasses will have an impact of making your eyes worse without wearing them.

Whether your eyes will get worse or not depending on other conditions.
