i was told that you spend less gas driving with the windows closed and the AC on low than keeping the AC off and keeping the windows down because of the aerodynamics of the drag created by wind....

is this true?

  1. ever watch Myth Busters ? They know everything.

    Unless they are wrong.

Use the AC, the difference isn't worth worrying about

  2. Having your windows down does decrease you fuel mileage, however not quite as much as having he A/C on.  The difference is so minimal that the little bit of extra fuel is well worth it in my mind.

  3. Above a certain speed, yes.  However, there is no one magical number for all cars as the aerodynamics changes with each vehicle design.  As a general rule of thumb, at city speeds, it is better to have the window(s) open but at highway speeds, running the a/c is more efficient.

  4. From what I've heard when you are driving in the city it's better to keep the windows down but at highway speeds aerodynamics become more important and you should roll them off and turn the AC on.
