Is it true if you eat to many carrots you will turn orange?

I am a preschool director and we have a little girl in our school that eats tons of squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. and yes, she does have an "orangey" tint to her skin.  She doesn't have "pink" skin like the other children in class, because she eats so many things with beta-carotene in them.  So, yes, if you eat too much, your skin can take on an orange hue... sorta like the old-school tanning creams that you could use.

    My mom's friend in college had a sort of eating disorder and she mostly just ate carrots and so her skin had an orange tint for a year or 2!!!

  7. Well not orange persay. But my daughter eats tons of squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc and the doctor said that if she didn't notice the healthy eyes that she would think she was jaundice. (yellow/orange tinted).

  8. Yes, it's true. Not only carrots, but many foods with high carotene; sweet potatoes, casava, pumpkin, etc. However, you must eat a "great deal" of these foods to develop the syndrome. Much more than anyone normally would. These foods contain a protein pigment, 'carotene' which "seeks" out the skin to store itself. It is not the same thing as "beta-keratin", the active ingredient of "vitamin A".

    You may not be bright orange but your skin may have an orangish tint to it.

  16. yes it is, because of the beta cerotene, an organic compound found in orange food...if you eat too many of any orangish colored food you can take on a orange hue..Ive seen it happen before my aunt kept giving my cousin the organic sweet potatoes because they were his favorite, after about 2 weeks of that he was ORANGE. but it has to be large amount and nothing else, so if your feeding your child strictly orange things, carrot, sweet potatoes, peaches, ect. yes you can turn orange

  17. No, you would have to eat a truckload of carrots to get enough of the orange chemical to turn orange.  However, you can stain your teeth a little orange, by eating ALOT of fresh carrots every day!

  18. YES. I used to feed my baby carrots and sweet potatoes baby food. I didnt' notice she was orange but the doctor did.

    She walked in the room and said 'eating a lot of carrotts, eh?'

    I said how did you know? She said the beta carotene in orange veggies turn your skin orange if you eat a lot, but it's harmless.

  19. when my kids were infants and hadn't had many baby foods introduced yet, they ate a lot of sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots.  they all ended up looking fairly jaundiced (a concern because one of my kids had had a rare kind of jaundice a few months before, and at first we thought it was reoccuring).  the pediatrician reassured us that it was just all those orange foods.  sure enough, as we added more foods to their diet so the orange things were a smaller proportion of their diet, they started looking normal again.

  20. You have to eat a lot, but YES! Carrots contain a lot of beta-carotene which gives skin an orange tint. It is a proven fact. Look it up or ask your doctor is you don't believe it.
