Is it true kids today have shorter attention spans?

I keep reading that kids today have shorter attention spans - but is it true? Also, I wonder if teachers today have changed their teaching methods accordingly?

As a future teacher, I'm interested to hear what others think.

  1. Kids have shorter attention spans because they're used to getting instant gratification. Most parents sit their children in front of the T.V., video game, or computer and the children become used to getting information quickly that way. When placed in a classroom, they do not receive information as quickly and so become restless and bored. It's a really sad thing, my children (when I have them in ten years) will not rot in front of a television, video game or internet all day long.

  2. I don't think so, my 45 year old mother has a shorter attention span then my 2 year old cousin. It's hard for pretty much anyone to sit in a desk and do strictly textbook work, most teachers expand their lesson plans for that reason.
