  1. Under the current rules if you married a Prince you would become a princess with you husband's name (Sophie Wessex is also known as The Princess Edward). Traditionally sons of the monarch have been given a title upon their marriage and the wife is known by that title e.g Prince Edward was created Earl of Wessex, so his wife is Countess of Wessex. If you marry the heir to the throne you will have the female equivalent of his titles  i.e. When the Queen dies and Charles inherits the throne, William will automatically become Duke of Cornwall, his wife will be the Duchess of Cornwall, then if he is created Prince of Wales, his wife will become Princess of Wales and then when he inherits the throne she will become Queen consort.

If you marry a Princess you do not necessarily get a title, neither Mark Philips or Tim Lawrence gained a title when they married Princess Anne.

  2. According to "sources" Princess Anne doesn't want her children to have titles - they don't - so neither of her husbands has taken one.Just as well, Phillips since married some American who would now be the Duchess of Kfoops!

All of the Queen's sons' children are Prince/sses.Including Edward's two.

I expect that on the eve of a royal wedding, there are meetings of all concerned to discuss what titles if any are to be granted - certainly happened when Philip married Elizabeth and became the Duke of Edinburgh on the spot.

If/when Fergie's girls get hitched, their partners MAY be made Earl of Bloggs or Lord Snafflebottom, but on the past evidence of royal grandchildren marrying, it hasn't always happened eg with Princess Margaret's daughter Sarah(Mrs Daniel Chatto).

  3. In the British Royal Family all the sons of a monarch are royal princes and they are given the title of duke on their marriage. All daughters of a monarch are princesses. All children of a prince are princes and princesses. Children of a princess only inherit their titles from their father. If he doesn't have one the children have no titles.

Traditionally, all wives of male members of the British Royal Family, the aristocracy and members of the public take the style and title of their husbands. Diana, Princess of Wales was not "Princess Diana" as the media called her, because she was not born a British princess. Her correct title was The Princess of Wales and when she divorced she became Diana, Princess of Wales.

When a man marries into the family he does not get a title automatically.  Prince Philip was a prince of Greece and Denmark, not of the UK. Elizabeth II did not create her husband Philip, Duke of Edinburgh until 1957, five years after her accession.

As stated earlier, Anne was a princess because her mother was queen, but her husband did not automatically get a title. The queen offered, but the couple refused. Since you inherit titles from your father, not your mother, Peter and Zara have no titles. In any case they would not have been Prince or Princess since their father was not a prince.

When King George V created the House of Windsor in 1917 he ruled that only the sons of a brother of the king would be princes with the title of Royal Highness. Their children would have the style and title of the sons of non-royal English dukes. The eldest son of the Duke of Kent is the Earl of St. Andrews and he will inherit the title of Duke of Kent but not the "His Royal Highness (HRH)".

    =====================

    There have been informal exceptions.

    (1)  As mentioned earlier, Princess Diana was used so often by the media, it would almost seem rude to correct someone.

    (2) In November 1935, Lady Alice (age 33) married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, Queen Elizabeth's uncle. She became the Duchess of Gloucester. At the age of 70 her oldest son died in a plane crash. Her husband died of grief less than 2 years later. Although her title should have been HRH The Dowager Duchess of Gloucester she felt that the title was gloomy. Queen Elizabeth allowed her to use the title and style HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

So Alice became a princess at age 72, and remained one until her death at age 102.

    (3) The youngest two grandchildren (under age 5) of the queen are legally "Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex"  and "Prince James of Wessex" . There father is a Prince and the son of a monarch so they inherit his title. But once again, the parents feel that prince and princess are awkward for children in the 21st century. Especially since they are only 8th and 9th in line for the throne. At their request, the children are referred to as "Lady Louise Windsor", and "Viscount Severn".

    ---

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York use their legal titles. They are 5th and 6th in the line of succession, and their father never expressed the concern that his brother and sister had about the title.

    ---

Naturally, there was never any consideration of Prince William or Prince Harry not using their titles.

Samantha's question: You only get a title from your mother if your mother is the monarch: Margaret was a princess, because her father was a king. But her children,

    (1) David Albert Charles Armstrong-Jones,

    (2) Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto cannot get the titles from their mother, because she is not a monarch.

  4. yes because Prince William is in line to become King when the queen floats away, so whome ever has the lucky hand of being his wife will soon be the Queen to. But ifffffff Williams Die's then the thrown gets pasted down to the next sibling which would be Prince Harry

  5. Think I'm right in saying that you cannot be 'made' a Prince (you have to be born one) but females who marry Princes DO become Princesses. (Diana was "The Princess Charles" but was better known as Diana, Princess of Wales. Fergie was "The Princess Andrew"). So yes, it's true that anyone who marries Prince 'Harry' would be titled as "The Princess Henry" but probably another title would be bestowed.

The Countess of Wessex is also titled "The Princess Edward".

As for the men - Prince Philip was already a Prince before he was married as he was born to the King and Queen of Greece and Denmark. If a 'commoner' marries a Prince or Princess they are usually given a courtesy title (e.g. Anthony Armstrong-Jones was made the Earl of Snowdon).

(Princess Anne chose to have the titles dropped for Zara and Peter).

It can get very confusing. I don't know why Sarah and David Armstrong-Jones were not titled Princess and Prince since their mother was a Royal Princess by birth. Maybe someone more knowledgable will tell us ? !

    Hope this helps.

  6. No. When you marry a royal prince you become a princess;you also take on any other royal titles that your husband bears.Sophie is a royal princess, but she is called by the honorary royal title Countess of Wessex because,as a wedding gift,Edward was made Earl of Wessex. When his father dies,Edward will become Duke of Edinburgh.Sophie's full title is HRH The Princess Edward,Countess of Wessex. http://www.royal.gov/uk/output/Page5561....

says:"Upon his marriage to Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, he was created The Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn. At the same time it was announced that His Royal Highness will be given the title Duke of Edinburgh in due course, when the present title now held by Prince Philip eventually reverts to the Crown."

Harry's wife,if she is a commoner, will become HRH The Princess Henry and whatever royal aristocratic title that her husband is given. The same can be said of William's wife.

Male commoners are a different matter. They do not automatically receive titles.Princess Anne's husbands both refused titles, but Princess Margaret's husband became Earl Snowdon.

  7. if you married prince william you definately would become a princess and as for harry probably upon marrage he will givern a title but its more than likely going to be duke of york when the current duke of york dies
