Question:

Is it true that Federer will lose his No.1 ATP Rank now that he has lost Wimbeldon to Nadal?

He has lost the Australian to Djokovic, the French Open and Wimbeldon to Nadal. Apparently Wimbeldon counts for the most possible ATP points for the champion who wins it out of any other tournament. So this would give Rafa the boost he needs to pass Fed in the ranks. I guess I'm wondering what everyone's opinon of this situation is, do you think Federer will regain his rank? Obviously winning the US Open alone will not be enough, McEnroe mentioned before the match that after he was number 1 for 3 years and lost it, he was never able to recover it again. The way Nadal has amplified his game on grass is incredible, he has already mastered clay, but he has yet to perform well in hard court matches. What are your thoughts?

  1. Federrer  has 6900 points and nadal has 6055 points the rankings are after wimbledon finals and if nadal wins the next grand slam then they will be very close to each other.

  2. fed will still be no 1 player. but their margin is closer. federer will lose 300 points and nadal will gain 300 points. their margin closes from about 1000 to not more than 500.

if fed doesn't perform well in the rest of the season (like not winning US Open) while nadal can perform well, maybe nadal can be the no1 player in the world in the end of the season.

all grand slam wins (aussie open, french, wimbledon, and us open) giving you 1000 points. and be a finalist giving you 700 points.

nadal has to at least defend all of his atp ranking points

  3. Despite his loss, he still has a comfortable lead in ranking points. The mens point system is different then the women, not that, that makes a difference. While he and Nadal reached the final to defend last years points, Nadal earns a few more for winning it while Roger loses just a few. It will take Nadal to have a successful hard court season to surpass Roger this year, and for Roger to lose in the early rounds. Nadal could take over top ranking by end of season but if not, he is already looked at by many, being players, commentators, sports writers, and fans, as the top player right now.

  4. Air is getting thinner for Roger, for sure.  Besides he has to defend the US Open & the Cincinnati warm up. Even so he will not earn the points.  Should he lose them he will step back 1,500 points.  Wow !  On the contrary, Nadal has nothing to lose at the US Open, because he'd had a bad records last year due to his knee injury. Djokovic has to defend the Roger's this year... Of course there are plenty of fast court specialists. But they are no threat to Nadal as yet.

And Nadal has improved his game tremendously, and he will eventually prevail on all surfaces,. Perhaps not this year... Nadal will collide w/ Federer or Djokovic at the Aussie Open 2009, IMO. But one never knows ?  Nadal is only 545 points short from Federer's right now. Do the math.

  5. No he is still world number 1 and i hope it stays that way!!

    I love him = ]

  6. Well, for one Nadal can't keep winning French Opens forever.

Nadal has to improve by a significant amount at the hard court tournaments.

He'd have to make the final at the Canadian Masters to improve, at least the semis at the U.S. Open and get to the quarters in Cincinnati.

But if Federer wins those tournaments, and he can, he'll keep his #1.

Also, John McEnroe is a liar, he only wishes he was #1 for 3 years. He wasn't he did have two consecutive streaks of being #1 for a whole year though.
