$25.00 extra for the tools they use to fix your car?

I took my truck for maintenance & repair and they charge me an extra $25.00 + tax and I just want to make sure I didn't get riped off.

  1. a lot of places do that if they have to use a special tool for the job.. they we going to charge me 80 bucks for a tool for my calipers on my supra but i just bought the tool for 100 and did it myself.

  2. Nena, Try visiting a car repair center in your area. http://www.autorepairshoplocator.com They can help you with your questions. Try vistiting several places and compare what they say.

  3. What you are talking about are usually called "shop supplies" and it is a standard charge in the industry.  The amount a shop or dealer will charge for shop supplies varies but is usually a percentage of the total bill (for example 6%) usually capped at $25 or $30.

Shop supply charges are a catch-all for miscellaneous expenses a shop incurs as part of performing its services.  From equipment purchases and maintenance to utilities - things that can not be readily or easily itemized on an invoice.

  4. thats why I don't go to dealers unless its under warranty.

  5. i have never heard of charging for tool usage. shop supplies maybe but not tool usage
