  1. it depends on what state you live in, all i had to do to get my permit was take a test, but to get my liscense i had to take a course, which i took at my high school, and a driving test which i took through the dmv.

  2. You don't have to go to driving school before you get your permit. If your parents teach you then all you have to do is fill out some worksheets and read through the study book and show those completed sheets to the people at the DMV. Then you take the permit test and if you pass you'll get your permit and be able to drive with an adult until you turn 16.

  3. it would depend on what state you are in but in most states your parents can teach you to drive. Your insurance would be less expensive if you took a driver education course to learn how to drive.

  4. You must have had behind the wheel training before you get your permit and license, at least in California.

  5. It would probably depend on your state. Call your local DMV (Dept of Motor Vehicles) and ask them. They can probably tell you.

However many car insurance companies offer discounts for teens who have attended a driving school.

  6. I taught all three of my children how to drive.

  7. You don't have to have it but it takes alot of your insurance costs off plus it helps you get experience. But if your parents are willing to pay the extra money and you're ok with getting yelled by your parents then go for it.

  8. In California, my son took an online training course for the "book work" portion, then allowed to sign up for the behind the wheel portion of his driver's education with the same school, and then was able to take the form to the DMV and get 3 - only 3 sessions of a couple hours of actual driving with the school but here is the catch, they told me explicitly that they DO NOT teach them how to drive.  They are only to make sure that they know how to drive!  So in effect, the kid gets a permit, signs up for the behind the wheel sessions from the "school" but it is still up to the parents to teach them how to drive, which we did.  That is the law in California for you, absolutely ridiculous.

It is just another scam for someone to make money of the citizens...  and in our driving culture, it truly isn't a 'priviledge', it should be a 'right 'otherwise you could not survive here.

So to answer your question, yes, you have to complete the first portion of instruction and sign up with a school to get the form to take to the DMV as proof.  The book portion covers all of the basics, like dotted lines, signals, visibilty issues, laws, laws, laws, and such.  That part is always easy.

  9. I would have to say it is better to go to driving school than getting taught by your parents on how to drive.  Be sure to find a good driving instructor.  The driving instructor knows all the rules about driving and teaches you all the fundamentals of driving.   Also if you make a mistake, they have a brake pedal near them to stop the car.  With that, you can also practice with your parents to teach you more about driving.

The more instructions the better you will learn to drive!  GOOD LUCK

  10. A permit allows you to only drive when either your parents or anyone who has there license for at least 5 years is with you when you are driving. I do not think Drivers ed is required to get a permit. Drivers ed is required though to get a license, where you can drive by yourself.

Ask your local Dept of Transportation for more info, the place where you can get your permit/license.
