  1. Yes, it is true; México city was built over Tenochtitlán, aztecs capital; the spaniard buildings are, actually, built with the stones from the destroyed  astec buildings. Since the aztecs used to built over its own building (those were over a lake) the actual downtown of México city is over the ancient Tenochtitlán.

  2. Yes, you can see underneath the cathedral there is a big aztec piramid.  Next to the Cathedral they removed the whole block with all the colonial buldings and found the main Aztec Temple called El Templo Mayor.  Now there is a big museum showing all what they found.  It is a magical city, very impresive and spectacular.

The Aztecs built their sacred city of Tenochtitlan on a lake.  There is lots of water under Downtown Mexico City.

You can see the masive big and heavy building of the Mexican Cathedral is sinking.  Right now it is under the street level and still sinking.

  3. Yes, Mexico City was built on top of the Aztec capitol, Tenochtitlan.  Tenochtitlan was an island in the lake Texcoco when Cortez conquered the Aztecs.  He leveled the temples and over time the lake was filled in.  You can still see remains of some of the temple next to the main cathedral in Mexico City.
