though, i feel that because 'to rap' is to converse, it's pretty likely that it means that the rappers are talking, the hallmark of rap.

I think rhythmic American poetry is a valid acronym, but I don't think that is the origin of the word rap.  I've always thought that rap came from the slang term "to rap" meaning to causally converse.
