I was going to buy a nice piece of used furniture off of Kijiji in Toronto on Ca but I am hearing that I should be careful because I could end up getting cockroaches here in my own home in Barrie On Canada if they live in the furniture that I purchase in Toronto? Any help appreciated.

  1. no but vancouver does!!!!!!they have a major bed bug issue going on including $$$$$$$ hotels!!!

  2. I'd be cautious with bedbug infestations many large cities have had in recent years.  Here is a link to a map showing all the reports for Toronto.  Keep in mind, this is only the reports of people who went to the site and filed.

  3. Toronto is not infested per se; it has as many cockroaches as any other city in the more southern part of Canada.

No matter - always ALWAYS double and triple check the cleanliness of any piece of used furniture.

  4. I think that is hilarious! Toronto does not have a cockroach infestation! I've lived here my whole life and have never had cockroaches!! AND I was an Antique dealer for years and never once have I come across a cockroach in anything I have sold.

That being said... anytime you buy something that is used-from ANYWHERE- just give it a good look over... better safe than sorry. ;-)

I wouldn't shy from buying that piece of furniture! That's crazy.

    Good Luck!

  5. When purchasing any item off eBay or Kijiji, you have no idea who it was owned by, and what conditions it was in before it arrived at your house. It could be sold by a sweet old lady that just does not need the furniture anymore, or it may have been in a house that was infested with a mold problem, or with bugs.

My advice would be that you inspect the furniture before bringing it into your home. For upholstered furniture, a good cleaning of the material and wipe down of the wood/metal pieces is in order.

As for a cockroach infestation, they are present in any unclean environment, wherever they can find food and the right living conditions. And they are hard to kill. It would be naive of me to say that Toronto has no roaches, but I would not describe the city as infested or having a roach problem.

You may want to ask the seller what area of Toronto that the furniture is coming from. This may help you decide if there is a higher chance of a vermin or bug issue.

For example, in Montreal, we tend to have more cases of cockroaches reported in the Cotes-des-Neiges area for some reason. If I were buying furniture from that area, I would certainly consider having it cleaned and/or fumigated before bringing it into my house.

  6. It really depends on where you get the furniture from. As long as you spray it and clean it before it enters your home you should be fine.
