  1. probably

if traffic is down, they wont hesitate, they dont have to "get ready" they just do it.

It will be only regional, I know some places are still short of people.

It happens, sad to say but that's a fact of railroading.

but fergawdsake dont listen to rumors, they are like buttholes, everyone has one and wants you to hear it. If you listen to every one, it will drive you crazy.

if I had a nickel for every doom and gloom rumor I have heard the last 35 years I wouldnt be here, I would be buying a round for Donald Trump on my yacht and giving him financial advise.

edit: coolhand, yup, exactly right, I did the whole lay/off-recall thing for several years. strictly by the numbers, been there done that. no way to raise a family but somehow we do it. hang in there, it gets better eventually

  2. I have been furloughed on and off since January of 2007, and I am now.  With about 50 people in front of me, and about 60 or more behind me.  I wouldn't be surprised if they furlough more, and in more locations.  It's funny, (funny sad, not funny ha ha), that here in San Antonio, the Toyota Tundra plant is stopping production for 3-4 months, but keeping all of their full time employees working doing other things, training, retooling and so forth.  But as soon as UP doesn't need you, they send you home without a thank you, good luck or anything, it just goes to show you how different companies treat their employees  UP has been a culture of liars and thieves who care nothing for the people who actually built and run the railroad from it's very inception, and that continues to this day.  But still, I am their *****, as soon as they call me back to work, I will come running with a smile on my face.

Just a side note, the last time I was recalled to work, I quit a pretty good job where I had worked for the previous three months, after working for the railroad for a week, I was furloughed again.  I quit a good job to go back to work for a week, only to get sent home again.  They absolutely care nothing for the employees, it's very disheartening.

  3. There has been no rumors where i work about that. They just recalled all ours. That doesn't really mean anything though. When business is slow they can cut them off without warning.

  4. I heard 2000 or more

  5. Union Pacific never hired an employee it would not cut- off in a heart beat.
