I am a Vegan and I do not eat diary products or meat for animal rights.I was looking up Recipes for Vegans and saw a Recipe called Mudd Grit Oreo cupcakes. It said that Vegans can eat Oreos but did not say why.I was shocked because I thought that the cream between the cookies had milk in it.And the cookies are chocolate, right??My favorite cookie before I became a Vegan was Oreos and I would be so excited if I could actually eat them.Is it true that Vegans can eat Oreos??

  1. You can eat them and still be vegan, but they are very, very bad for you.

  2. The cream Oreos are made of was historically made with lard, which wouldn't have made them vegan friendly.

However, since the trans fat ban, they have to use vegetable products, which generally are less likely to contain trans fat than animal fats. So they are usually safe.

Check the ingredients- I know for a fact they don't have dairy, so as long as the fat component is vegetable based, you should be all set!

  3. animal rights..."milking cows is intruding upon their privileges"

dumbest thing i ever heard. if you want to know if there is milk in the cookies why don't YOU READ THE INGREDIENTS? pure genius!

  4. In the U.S. Oreos are currently vegan - formulations change, however, so check labels frequently.  Once upon a time they had lard in them, but that was taken out years ago.

Oreos sold in Europe (and, I think, in Canada) are not vegan.

Chocolate comes from a plant and is therefore vegan until and unless someone adds milk to it.  The makers of Oreos are not going out and buying Hershey bars to make their cookies with, they are using cocoa, a plant product.

  5. Yep, the US recipe is vegan. Same with the golden kind and "uh oh" Oreos.

  6. if i was vegan i would think about doing it HEALTHY i wouldnt touch anything with perservatives and artifical ingredients in it because thats almost as bad as eating meat (vegetarian)

  7. Oreos made in the USA are vegan, but the Canadian and European ones are not.  The "cream" in the middle is just sugar and oil, and the crust is mostly flour and sugar.  They list chocolate as an ingredient but they never list milk, a common allergen, as being present.  I was pretty excited when I found out they were vegan-friendly too.

Just substitute the milk for dipping with soy milk, hehe.

  8. Are Vegans trying to eat a healthy and morally correct diet by eating a more 'natural' diet without manufactured unhealthy refined products with added ingredients?

I am not a Vegan and try to eat healthfully by eliminating unhealthy confections - not trying to justify their 'correctness'!

Why are you excited in public about the possibility to eat something 'bad'?

    .

  9. The cookies are vegan. Why do you think they taste so dark and a little bitter? Because there's no milk.

The cream in the middle is somewhat like frosting. Mostly sugar, water, corn syrup, fructose, color, ect.

So, they're vegan. They're just not the best for you.

And that Mudd Grit Oreo thing sounds rich and tasty!

  10. your a vegetarian cos you dont eat meat

  11. Yeah, i don't see why they can't eat them...They also are good for people like me with dairy allergies...

I think vegans who don't eat sugar are going a little overboard..Geez

  12. They can indeed.  Cocoa doesn't have milk in it unless someone adds it to make chocolate bars and candies.  You can find vegan chocolate candies, in fact.

The reason I don't eat Oreos is they have high fructose corn syrup, which, while vegan, is really, really bad for you.

Paul Newman's company makes similar sandwich cookies (Newman O's), which are vegan and have fewer artificial ingredients.

And I remember that back in the 1970s, Nabisco products had lard, so my family (because we were Jewish) ended up buying Hydrox from Sunshine because they didn't.   But as Mockingbird pointed out, formulations change, and Oreos are now vegan.

Rule #1 of being a vegan:  RTFL.
