So I'm getting a scooter that has all the signals and things that are needed to drive on the street. So, can I ride it without a licence or endorsment? Its a little 49cc, but its "street legal". What do you think?

Oh and if age is important, I am 16.

  1. Don't buy one of these things. They are between a toy and junk.  If we HAD to we would but we don't. Get your endorsment and buy at least a 125cc and better yet a 250. You'll be glad you did.

  2. According to the NVDMV you DO need a drivers license to operate a motorized scooter on a public road if over 50cc you need a class m

  3. check with your local dept of motor vehicle, or ask your police dept.  good luck

  4. Some states require a 'moped' license, which is easy to get.  But in most states, even ones that require a moped license, you do not have to register the bike and get insurance.

  5. In Indiana you can ride a 49cc scooter at 15 years old without a motorcycle endorsement. People who lose their license for legal reasons ride scooters. Ask the license branch in your state to find out.

  6. Not all little scooters can be riden on the street even with the equipment they need a title and a MSO the little toys that they are sellling do not have them and are not safe for the street. It takes more than lights to make them safe.

  7. Joe - I just bought a Schwinn Newport 50 (49.5cc) and according to what i've read in Colorado law, only a regular valid drivers license is required (not a motorcycle license) - there is a "registration" that costs $5.25 and is good for 3 years - i got my "registration" from the dealer from whom i bought the Schwinn - - - my Schwinn top speed is 30 mph unless i'm going downhill (LOL) and i make a practice of sticking the the bike lanes to the extent possible.  Enjoy your scooter and ride safe.  Oh, no requirement to "tag" my scooter or the one you specifically mentioned (49cc).  A "DOT" approved helmet is recommended as is protective eye wear and appropriate protective clothing.
