It would make sense, but I think it's an exaggerated generalization.

The Democratic Party used to be the party of the South, starting during the antebellum (Yes, they supported slavery), while the North was largely Republican (the party of Lincoln). New England used to be a stronghold of conservativism. The parties realigned themselves in the '30s and '40s. So the infamous lynchings in the Deep South were probably mostly carried out by liberals.

The Republican and Democratic parties today are drastically different, though. So this political attack has very little relevance.
