  1. They decended to what they are today by adaptations.  Thats why they vary in size from small dogs to big dogs.  After the last ice age dogs learned to adapt to there surroundings from then on there were all kinds of dogs, wolves are only one kind.  But they are primitive, resulting from various changes and what wolves are today towards the other canines in the family.

  2. yes gregg your sister is right.

  3. Yes. DNA evidence has conclusively proved that modern dogs are descended from wolves first domesticated by man about 12,000 years ago

The difference between dogs and wolves is the result of deliberate breeding for certain characteristics (such as the ability to guard herds). Interestingly there is a theory that dogs are basically wolves trapped in the puppy stage, since behaviour such as barking, tail wagging is only found in wolf young, never in adults

  4. Yes, but it's difficult to believe when you look at this, aint it?

  5. Based on examinations of dogs from places as distant as Peru and Alaska, the researchers hypothesize that "ancient and modern dogs worldwide share a common origin from Old World gray wolves."

  6. NOVA did a program on this "Dogs and More Dogs." The transcript is available online (link below) and is pretty readable.

"NARRATOR: Tonight, NOVA tells the true story of dogs. How did a fierce wolf become a playful puppy? Why do they come in so many shapes and sizes? And what does the future hold for our oldest and closest animal companion? Dogs and More Dogs, right now on NOVA."
