I was told by two Australian friends that I can enter Australia or NZ on a visitors visa and start working right away. Is that true?

  1. absolutly not, no one can work on a tourist visa

you can apply for a 12 month working holiday visa if your between 18 and 30,but there are conditions

  2. No way mate! If you want to work here, you can't do so on a visitor's visa.

If you're between 18 and 30 and are a high school graduate, you can easily get a work and holiday visa for 12 months, but any other type of work visa is very difficult to get.

The first answer refers to a 457 temporary visa, but even on that, you need to have skills in a listed (on the Skilled Occupations List - SOL)  occupation in which workers are in short supply in Australia and the employee must also apply and meet other requirements. 457 visas can be granted quickly, but all others take around 12 months unless we're desperate for people with your particular qualifications.

No work visas are available to people without SOL occupations and for the vast majority of them, you also have to pass a points test.

  3. Good friends you got trying to get you arrested and deported

  4. No you have to get a work visa first, the employer applies for the work visa, not you. Work visas can take anywhere from 1 to 6 months to get.

  5. No, definitely not.  Check http://www.immi.gov.au/immigration.htm for information on the visa requirements.
