This applys only to england, however, i shall soon be 17 (the 29th Jan next year) and i was wondering as i have heard rumours this may become the law by other people in my year group. Please can you answer this question for me as at the moment, i understand this "law change" to be that you are still able to get a permit when you are 17, however you will have to be 18 to be able to take the driving exam (not the theory).

  1. No, and do you mean the UK not just England!!

  2. The changes are still in the discussion stage.

As I understand some of the changes may be that new drivers will have to learn to drive over a longer period with a compulsory minimum number of lessons with a government licenced driver instructor, intensive driving courses will banned, the cost of learning and the test will increased.

One of the effects will be that learning to drive from the start to the first driving test could take up to a year.

The changes were due to come in later this year but, this is politics it could take many, many months before any changes come and it could be something completely different.

  3. Oh my goodness... if I only had a pound for every rumour about the driving age going up to 18 THIS YEAR, I would be a rich man. According to the rumours it has been going up to 18 every year since the year dot!

    Relax. It isn't.

The Driving Standards Agency are currently running a public consultation on how to improve driving and safety standards for drivers within the the first year of passing their test. One of the MANY proposals is for the minimum driving age to be raised to 18. If this is approved, it would be at least 2011 before it was introduced and, even then, it is highly unlikely as the current recommendation is against it.

My daughter is 8. I reckon her year is the first year that may seriously need to be concerned about raises in the minimum age. Tell the other people in your yeargroup they are gullible and haven't got a clue what they are talking about!

    Good luck.

  4. This was discussed in parliament earlier this year, but no proposal of a change of law has been made, it will certainly not be made law prior to January next year, as any bills to pass through the houses need to go through a very long winded process, taking many months.

  5. as an instructor I can tell you to relax it hasn't changed. The dsa are running a consultation on the matter but as its the dsa it could take years to come through. I hope this is of use to you

  6. I think that is true. That is what I have heard anyways
